KPop Demon Hunters Directors to Speak at VIEW Conference
The directors of “KPop Demon Hunters,” the popular animated musical film from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation, are among a packed lineup of participants at October’s VIEW Conference in Turin, Italy. Other recently announced speakers include the directors of Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s upcoming “The Cat in the Hat” and DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys 2,” plus top artists behind Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and Apple’s “F1: The Movie,” among many others.
The English-language VIEW Conference, taking place Oct. 12-17, has been bringing together a diverse group of creatives and artisans across the film, television, games and technology industries for keynotes, talks, presentations and masterclasses for 25 years.
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans will discuss the making of “KPop Demon Hunters,” which follows a trio of K-pop stars who lead secret lives as demon hunters to protect their fans from supernatural threats. Prior to coming to Sony Pictures Animation, Kang worked at Warner Animation Group, Illumination Entertainment and DreamWorks Animation. Before directing “KPop Demon Hunters” with Kang, Appelhans wrote and directed Sony’s animated feature “Wish Dragon.” He previously worked on projects at Disney, Laika and Paramount.
“Every so often a film comes along that captures the world’s imagination,” says VIEW Conference director Maria Elena Gutierrez. “‘KPop Demon Hunters” is one of those films, and I could not be more excited to welcome its two talented directors to our stage here in beautiful Turin.”
Also on tap for the conference is “Cat in the Hat” director Alessandro Carloni. He will give attendees a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the adaptation of the classic Dr. Seuss tale that comes out next year. The feature is the first in a planned series by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation of the Dr. Seuss canon.
“Alessandro Carloni has an incredible track record as a filmmaker,” says Gutierrez, “and his new movie promises to be something truly special.”
“The Bad Guys 2” director Pierre Perifel and VFX supervisor Matt Baer will be on hand to discuss the DreamWorks Animation sequel, which follows the titular group of now-reformed villains as they try to be good but are sidetracked by a new criminal crew known as The Bad Girls.
Other recently confirmed speakers include Ryan Tudhope, overall VFX supervisor on the high-octane racing drama “F1: The Movie,” and ILM visual effects supervisor Daniele Bigi, who will discuss the effects in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”
Previously announced speakers include Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian, two of the directors of Disney-Pixar’s “Elio,” and Dean DeBlois, director of DreamWorks’ live-action “How to Train Your Dragon.”
