HBO Max and Netflix Win Most Emmys: The Studio Tops Night

By the end of Sunday’s Emmys ceremony, “The Studio” had become the top show of the year, taking home 13 trophies total.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s entertainment industry comedy began the night already having won nine awards at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 6 and 7. At the Primetime Emmys on Sunday, it picked up four more: outstanding comedy series, lead comedy actor (Rogen), comedy directing and comedy writing. Its Creative Arts wins included awards for guest comedy actor (Bryan Cranston), casting, cinematography, contemporary costumes, music supervision, editing, production design, sound editing and sound mixing.

“The Penguin” earned the second-most Emmys, winning one at the Primetime ceremony (lead limited series actress Cristin Milioti and eight at the Creative Arts Emmys for a total of nine awards. In third place were “Adolescence,” “Severance” and “SNL50: The Anniversary Special” tied with eight awards each — unless counting the short form nonfiction win earned by “Adolescence: The Making Of Adolescence” along with the main series for a total of nine.

When counting by platform, Netflix tied with HBO/HBO Max as the most successful of the year. “The Penguin” was obviously the biggest boost for HBO and HBO Max, though the cable-streamer combo also got some help from “The Pitt” with five wins plus three wins apiece from “Hacks” and the documentary “Pee-Wee as Himself.” After “Adolescence,” Netflix’s winningest titles were “Arcane” and “Love Death + Robots” with five wins each. Apple TV+ came after Netflix and HBO/HBO Max, achieving 22 wins from the combined “Studio” and “Severance” sins.

NBC was the highest-ranking broadcast of the night thanks to the success of “SNL50: The Anniversary Special.” Its other three Emmys came from regular episodes of “Saturday Night Live.” Behind it, as the No. 5 platform of the night was Disney+ thanks to two “Andor” wins and one win each from music documentaries about John Williams and the Beatles. When combined with ABC, FX and Hulu’s wins, Disney had 13 wins overall — a significant drop from last year, when FX was the Emmys’ top network on its own thanks to “The Bear” and “Shogun.” This year, the premium cabler took home only two wins, both from “Welcome to Wrexham.
