The Mediapro Studio’s Cimarrón Opens up Offices in Colombia
Spain’s The Mediapro Studio has set up an office for its Cimarrón banner in Bogotá, Colombia in a bid to further expand its footprint in Latin America.
The move bolsters its commitment to the region’s audiovisual industry where Cimarrón has already been active in Uruguay, Mexico and Argentina. It also underscores Colombia’s emergence as a key production hub, driven by robust incentives, competitive costs, an experienced talent pool – underscored by Netflix’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” – and a broad spectrum of filming locations.
“The arrival of Cimarrón in Colombia, as part of The Mediapro Studio’s structure, marks a strategic milestone that reaffirms our strong positioning in Latin America. It also reflects a constantly evolving market and our commitment to anticipate and respond swiftly to the demands of clients and partners in an increasingly globalized environment,” said Javier Esteban, International Director, The Mediapro Studio.
Cimarrón’s first project in Colombia is romcom “Atrápelo quien pueda” (roughly translated to “Catch Him If You Can”), co-produced by The Mediapro Studio, U.S. Hispanic network Telemundo and leading Mexican exhibitor-distributor Cinépolis. The film kicked off principal photography on Sept. 29, starring Jaime Camil (“Jane the Virgin”) and directed by Alfonso Pineda Ulloa (“Todavia conmigo,” “Es por su bien”).
Seasoned producer-director Julián Duque, who brings nearly two decades of experience across scripted, documentary and advertising content in both Latin America and the U.S., has been appointed Head of Operations for Cimarrón in Colombia.
Said Santiago López, CEO of Cimarrón: “This expansion responds to the growing interest of international studios and platforms in producing content in Latin America. Colombia, a continual source of inspiration for our work in the region, represents a strategic step forward. Backed by The Mediapro Studio, strong local teams and a consolidated regional network, the new office in Colombia will allow us to grow as producers and connect with more emerging talent.”
“The arrival of Cimarrón in Colombia is a key step in The Mediapro Studio’s strategy to meet global demand with agile, local production infrastructure,” added Esteban. “We see Colombia not just as a location, but as a strategic production base.”
Cimarrón, which joined The Mediapro Studio in 2023, provided production services for J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow” and more recently, the remake of “The Kiss of the Spiderwoman” starring Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna, produced by Ben Affleck’s Artist Equity and directed by Bill Condon.
Among its original productions are “Barrabrava” (Prime Video), winner of the Platino Award for Best Ibero-American Series of the Year; “Amsterdam” (HBO Max); and “Sentença” (Prime Video). On the film side, notable titles include “The Delinquents,” “A Ravaging Wind” by Paula Hernández and “Power Alley” (“Levante”) by Lillah Halla, which took home the Fipresci Prize at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2023.
