FilmSharks has nabbed international sales rights to “The Evil That Binds Us” (“Todos los males”), a Chile-Mexico co-production from Nico Postiglione (“Immersion”) set to bow in competition at the upcoming edition of Austin’s Fantastic Fest.

Backed by Oro Films, Whisky Content and Frame, the 1950s Valdivia-set thriller follows Daniel, a boy who recently lost his mother and meets the Riedels, his father’s German-origin side family. Isolated by his cultural disconnection, Daniel finds solace in Ema, a girl who will unearth the Riedels’ dark secrets to him.

When Ema disappears and tragedy is covered up, Daniel faces betrayal and decides to seek revenge before leaving.

As a work in progress project, the film was showcased at the Cannes Marché du Film showcase Tallinn Black Nights Goes to Cannes in 2024. It benefited from Chile’s Fondo de Fomento Audiovisual and Corfo IFI Los Ríos support.

Shot in southern Chile with DoP Benjamín Echazarreta (“Gloria”), the feature stars Catrin Striebeck (“The Milan Protocol”), Tilo Werner (“The People Vs. Fritz Bauer”), Teodoro Bustos and Fernanda Finsterbusch (“Apps”).

Postiglione’s first feature, “Immersion”, had its international premiere at Tallinn Black Nights, where it took the Jury Special Prize. The film was selected and awarded in further different festivals such as Toulouse, Torino and Miami.

“Fantastic Fest offers genre cinema with artistic ambition a unique gateway to the American market,” said producer Dominga Ortúzar Lynch at Oro.

“We want the film to connect across territories and FilmSharks’ expertise in bringing genre films to wide audiencies is invaluable,” she said.

Postiglione added: “We set out to weave together drama, thriller, and even moments of terror. Fantastic Fest feels like the right home for a story rooted deep in the past of Chile.”

FilmSharks acquisitions executive Sofía Terán Corsini praised the title as a “psychotic slow-burn gem” already drawing top festival interest.
