It’s Ahead of the Curve

Marlon Wayans is standing by his new movie “Him” despite some less-than-stellar reviews.

The sports horror movie is currently sitting at 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Wayans took to Instagram on Sept. 19 — the film’s opening day — to encourage fans not to listen to the critics and check out the movie themselves.

“Just to be clear…I respect critics. Their job is to critique,” Wayans wrote. “I respect their work. It shapes our industry. But an opinion does not always mean it’s everyone’s opinion. Some movies are ahead of the curve. Innovation is not always embraced and art is to be interpreted and it’s subjective. I’ve had a career of making classic movies that weren’t critically received and those movies went on to be classics. So don’t take anyone’s opinion just go see for yourself. Love to all. ‘Him’ in theaters now.”

The photo component of the post included screenshots of low Rotten Tomatoes scores for other Wayans projects, including “White Chicks,” “Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood,” “Scary Movie,” “Scary Movie 2” and “A Haunted House,” that were commercial successes or have cult followings.

“Him” is about a young quarterback prospect (Tyriq Withers) getting drafted into the NFL and being taken under the wing of a legendary player (Marlon Wayans) to learn all about success in the league and getting ahead. Unfortunately, there are a lot of sacrifices — both metaphorically and not — that must be taken in order to make a name on the field.
